They’re showing Wall-E tonight at Valentino Pier – movie doesn’t start until 8:30pm but mac and cheese and hot dogs from Ice House come out around 7. Should be a fun event for the kids, if they can stay up that late for the show.

If Lords of Dogtown isn’t reason enough to attend tonight’s movie, sponsored by Movers not Shakers, then getting a chance to try a local resident’s culinary crafts hopefully is. And if that’s not, getting a chance to win a skateboard (anyone know who’s donating those?) should persuade at least a few more. Looks like the summer film series is slowly developing into more than just film screenings, so there’s a reason for everyone to get out and join in the fun.

In addition to the annual Jazz Fest, a few other fun activities are going on in Red Hook this weekend.

The Brooklyn Folk Fest, hosted by Down Home Radio Show, our local BWAC, and the Jalopy, it consists of three days of music. With a new band virtually every thirty minutes, there’s a lot of musicians playing and a lot of music to be heard. Check out the schedule here. Festivities start tonight at Jalopy and move to BWAC’s space (499 Van Brunt) for the weekend. More information here.
Red Hook hosts one of the best film-in-a-park series, with great movies, food, views, and plenty of room for a picnic. This year’s line-up will be unveiled on Sunday, along with a chance to vote on the last film!

Membership for new members opens today for the Red Hook CSA. For those new to CSAs, this stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and how it works is that members pay a large up front sum to farmers and basically “subscribe” to their output, receiving a weekly delivery of whatever vegetables are ripe that week (which you pick up yourself on Saturdays). This model makes it easier for farmers to gauge how much to produce and also gives them money up front to purchase the equipment they need to produce (seeds, tractors). Consumers get super fresh and local (and therefore delicious) vegetables, as well as a way to be more involved in the community and meet your neighbors.
All the details about pricing, what’s available, volunteer commitment, and how to sign up is here.

Just saw this post form late January from Greg O’Connell Jr. of the O’Connell Organization, the main real estate developer in the area, and it made me wish I had a business to move into the ‘hood! Hopefully it will inspire some interesting new businesses in the area:
“As of late, I have been wanting to create a post discussing our availabilities and the people suitable to occupy those availabilities. Instead, I am going to make it short and sweet. This is a cry for every man, woman and child to come to Red Hook, walk along the waterfront, look at one of the most beautiful views in the world (so I think) and try to envision your business, residence, life in Red Hook. In order to supplement your life-change I have something to offer you. At our various facilities along the waterfront I have office, warehouse, studio, outdoor, indoor, garden, roofdeck, chimney, walking, running, skipping, jumping space available. This space is for the most part raw, civil war era, nostalgic, rustic and historically unique. It is begging for someone to come in cherish, love and make their own. Perfect for a business to operate at a low cost and more importantly grow into. I am asking $8 per s/f per year for each warehouse space. The spaces range from 5,000 to 7,750 square feet making the range of rent per month cost $3325 – $5150. Please contact me if you are interested, you know someone that is interested or just want to find out more about our business and the vacancies we have. We need to spread the word that Red Hook is the place to be, because it truly is. This is no false marketing campaign, the businesses, streets, buildings, and most importantly the people are FACTS that this neighborhood is great. I want to negotiate leases with up-starts, people and businesses who promote creativity, vision and ambition. If we can get those entities in our neighborhood we can continue to tap its unlimited potential. Put out the word, COME TO RED HOOK, COME SEE WHAT YOU’RE MISSING, move your life here, move your shoe-making business here, move your clothing line here, move your woodworking here, move your monocle manufacturing/specialty shoe-lace/ashtray sculpting business here. I’m always open to meet and discuss or argue the positive attributes of this place so please contact me by e-mail or through my office. I will put all of my energy into making this waterfront a mecca for small businesses in Brooklyn and will speak to and work with anyone that can agree with this idea.
Please contact me if you are a business or individual that is interested in occupying this space on the Red Hook Waterfront.
- Greg O’Connell Jr.”

I wasn’t here last year for this event, but after reading this interview with it’s founder I wish I could make it this year – but just to watch. It looks like it’s for serious bikers only – here’s an excerpt:
“Track bikes are mandatory and the field consists of elite level roadies, bike messengers, and urban cyclists. The race distance is 20 laps around a .75 mile circuit which features several hairpin turns, a technical chicane, a cobblestone stretch, and a sprint finish. The Red Hook Criterium has developed a new and unique style of cycling event which combines the underground art of street racing with the intensity of high level competition in a fun spectator friendly atmosphere. ”
$20 gets you in, and it looks like at least ten people will go home with prizes. Register here starting Monday, March 7.

There’s a lot going on in Red Hook this weekend.

The biggest event of the weekend is the openhousenewyork studio tour. Studios all over the city will be open to the public, including 5 in Red Hook. If you live in Red Hook, you’ve probably been to a few of these, but maybe not the 1899 Carriage House on Dikeman St or Pier Glass Art Studio (which unfortunately appears to be sold out, but it never hurts to try in case of no-shows).
WHAT: Open houses and studio tours
WHEN: Saturday and Sunday, October 9th and 10th, varied times
WHERE: Kentler International Drawing Space, Pier Glass Art Studio, Red Hook Carriage House + Architecture Office, Sixpoint Craft Ales, Waterfront Museum and Showboat Barge
All of the details are here.

IMadeAnArt is hosting a Masquerade Party on Saturday night that looks pretty interesting. There’s live music, free wine and cheese, art, and, obviously, masks.
WHAT: IMadeAnArt Masquerade party
WHEN: Saturday, October 9th, 7pm
WHERE: 53 Richards St.

And finally, it’s not exactly the weekend unless you’re one of the lucky souls with Monday off for Columbus day, but the Everbrite Mercantile Co. is finally opening it’s doors on October 11. To celebrate, they’ll be hosting a Grand Opening Party all day long.
WHAT: Everbrite Mercantile Co. Grand Opening Party
WHEN: Monday, October 11th, 12pm-9pm
WHERE: 351 Van Brunt St.
